CHULA VISTA, CA — A 28-year-old man living in a Chula Vista homeless encampment was wounded in a shooting at a nearby river bottom, police said Tuesday. Dispatchers received a 911 call requesting help for a shooting victim shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday at an encampment underneath the Interstate 805/state Route 54 interchange near North Second Avenue, Chula Vista police Lt. David Oyos said. Investigators determined the shooting took place near a river bottom in the 100 block of North Second Avenue, then the victim was able to walk to the nearby encampment, Lt. Dan Peak said. The 28-year-old victim, whose name was not released, declined to provide further information on the shooting or the shooter, according to police. Medics took the man to a hospital for treatment of two gunshot wounds, which were not believed to be life-threatening, Peak said.
