In response to Republican leader Mitch McConnell’s warning to companies ‘to stay out of politics,’ people are referencing the Supreme Court decision in the Citizens United v. Federal Electoral Commission case, which enabled corporations and other outside groups to spend unlimited funds on elections
McConnell was responding to a number of companies speaking out against Georgia’s new voting legislation, saying: “Corporations will invite serious consequences if they become a vehicle for far-left mobs to hijack our country from outside the constitutional order.” Some people say the comments are at odds with the 2010 Citizens United decision, which allowed corporations to have a greater role in politics and increased the Republicans' ties with the business community.
Funny. He desperately wants corporations to be people (see Citizens United) with First Amendment rights when it comes to campaign cash... just not for any other type of speech.
The entire premise of the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United, which Sen. McConnell backed and backs wholeheartedly, is that corporations have full-throated First Amendment rights in politics.
When McConnell celebrated "Citizens United," he said, "For too long, some in this country have been deprived of full participation in the political process... the Constitution protects their right to express themselves about political candidates and issues up until Election Day"
Now that #MoscowMitch wants corporations to "Stay out of politics!" I guess he'll be leading the charge to reverse Citizens United. Cool !
