RMV Still Can't Inspect Vehicles Following Malware Attack

The state will be unable to inspect vehicles until at least Wednesday, marking what would be a full week of no vehicle inspections as the Registry of Motor Vehicles' vendor tries to recover from a malware attack. The RMV tweeted Monday it will continue to be unable to inspect vehicles through Tuesday due to a production issue at Applus Technologies. "The RMV continues to urge its vendor, Applus Technologies, to provide a timeline to resolution and confirmation of the extent of this nationwide system outage impacting citizens in need of a vehicle inspection, and the small businesses who run inspection stations in MA," the RMV said Monday morning. Customers can get updates at mavehiclecheck.com. Applus Technologies has had its system shut down since last Tuesday when it noticed a malware attack. It has since been working to relaunch operations. The company has a team "working around the clock" to fix the issues but was unable to offer a timetable, saying it could be "hours or days" before the problem is resolved. Applus Technologies said it does not know what kind of information may be at risk, if any. "We take very seriously our responsibility to provide the highest quality, most reliable vehicle inspection and emissions testing services to our customers and we pledge to have service restored as quickly as possible," Applus Technologies CEO Darrin Greene said in a statement. The RMV has asked law enforcement to not cite people for expired stickers while the system is down.
