Experts Predict: No 4th Coronavirus Wave For Connecticut

CONNECTICUT — New hospitalizations for the coronavirus are down 50 percent since January, Gov. Ned Lamont announced Monday, and many more of them are making their way back home. About 15 percent of people admitted to a Connecticut hospital in January died, Lamont said during a news conference Monday. Today, that number is around 5 percent. One of the reasons for the higher survivability rate is the average age of today's COVID-19 patient, who "tend to be younger people who are a little less sick," Lamont said. The number of hospitalizations dropped over the weekend by 15 beds, to 484. CTNewsWith the vast majority of the state's elderly population vaccinated, Lamont said he expected the percentage of young people among the infected population would continue to grow, and he urged them to get vaccinated. The daily COVID-19 positivity rate reported Monday was 3.28 percent, down about a quarter point from before the weekend. Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former commissioner of the U.S. Food & Drug administration joined the governor at the news conference Monday. He concurred that the latest coronavirus trends in Connecticut boded well for the state missing the dreaded 4th wave of new cases and hospitalization that has fallen on some states, most recently Michigan. Over 1,329,000 first doses of the coronavirus have been administered to Connecticut residents, according to the state Department of Public Health, and over 809,600 residents are currently fully vaccinated. Another 288,000 first doses are scheduled to be delivered this week, according to Josh Geballe, the state's chief operating officer. As of Monday, 82 percent of all Connecticut residents over the age of 65; 75 percent of all over the age of 55; 67 percent of all over the age of 45; and 45 percent over the age of 16 have received at least one dose of thevaccine. The coronavirus death toll climbed to 7,923 over the weekend, up 19. New confirmed cases are up by 2,699, to 316,655.
