DARIEN, CT — Three Darien schools were closed Monday due "staff illnesses," but the district did not specifically say whether it was the coronavirus. "Darien High School, Middlesex Middle School, and Royle Elementary School are closed Monday, April 5, 2021 with no remote learning," read a message on the district's website. Parents were notified of the closures Sunday evening, but the district's remaining elementary schools, Hindley, Holmes, Ox Ridge and Tokeneke, are open Monday. "Given the number of secondary school staff illnesses and the District's inability to cover classes and intervention services, the high school and middle school will be closed tomorrow with no remote learning or sporting events," Schools Superintendent Dr. Alan Addley wrote in the message to parents. He added that the closures "will essentially be treated the same as a conventional 'snow day' for secondary school students with the day being made up at the end of the school year." As of March 31, there were 28 cases of coronavirus in the district at eight locations, which resulted in 289 members of the school system community under quarantine, according to officials. The district does not disclose whether the cases are among students or staff. IMPORTANT NEWS All athletic practices and contests for tomorrow, Monday, April 5th have been canceled due to the cancellation of school. Please spread the word!! #RollWave— Darien H.S.
