AUSTIN, TX — One nationwide company known for coffee and donuts last week took a step toward ensuring Texans have access to healthy food in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and deadly February freeze. Dunkin' Joy In Childhood Foundation — the giving arm of the company behind Dunkin' Donuts — last week made a $10,000 to three hunger relief organizations in the state, including Central Texas Food Bank in Austin. Donations were also made to Bethel's Heavenly Hands in Houston and Crossroads Community Services in Dallas. In a news release, Dunkin' said the donations were made in response to an increase in Texans facing costly and potentially dangerous challenges caused by the pandemic and winter storm that affected Texas in February. In 2020, the foundation gave more than $5 million to child health and hunger organizations, Dunkin' said. Central Texas Food Bank, based in Austin, has provided food to Texans in need since its foundation in 1981. Today, it serves 21 counties in Central Texas. Food distributions will be available across Central Texas in April. Patch has partnered with Feeding America to help raise awareness on behalf of the millions of Americans facing hunger. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks across the country, estimates that in 2021, about 42 million Americans may not have enough nutritious food to eat due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
