UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Already awash with the arts, the Upper East Side has added another gallery to its portfolio: Salon 94 opened the doors late last month at its expansive converted mansion that will serve as its new headquarters. First opened in 2003 in the East 94th Street townhouse of art dealer Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, the new expansion began in 2018 when Rohatyn noticed a townhouse for sale on East 89th Street, steps away from Fifth Avenue and the Guggenheim Museum. Three years and much remodeling later, the five-story, 17,500-square-foot space opened to the public on March 20. Its first exhibitions include works by the French artist Niki de Saint Phalle, portraits by the Brooklyn artist Derrick Adams and sculptures by Japanese artist Takuro Kuwata. The building at 3 East 89th Street includes three floors of white cube galleries, a first-floor project gallery and an entertainment room overlooking the Guggenheim Museum. Other elements include an elegant staircase, wood herringbone floors and high, curved ceilings, Architectural Digest reported. Architect Rafael Viñoly had to get approval to renovate the landmarked building, which was built starting in 1913 and first owned by the philanthropist Archer Huntington and sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington.
