Easter Blaze Breaks Out In Simi Valley

SIMI VALLEY, CA — An Easter fire broke out in Simi Valley Sunday afternoon, just two days after a nearby 10.6-acre brush fire about six miles away. The fire, named the Westwood Fire, was reported around 3:50 p.m. in open space above Cottonwood Road, the Ventura County Fire Department told the Ventura County Star. Firefighters arrived when it was about two acres. The blaze was extinguished with the help of ground crews, helicopters, and air tankers. The blaze had reached roughly 23 acres before it was fully contained at around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Firefighters spent most of the night mopping up. Cottonwood Drive was closed between Tapo and Westwood streets for many hours, but are reopened as of Monday. On Thursday, a 10.6-acre blaze broke out near the 2800 block of Madera Road, just off the 118 Freeway, and about six and a half miles from Sunday's blaze. All westbound lanes on the 118 from Madera Road to Collins Drive were closed for a few hours. No injuries or structural damage was reported in either incident.
