WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — Western Springs saw an increase in coronavirus cases last week that was identical to the week before, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. As of Sunday, Western Springs had 1,072 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 27 from a week earlier, or a 2.7 percent hike. The week before, the village also experienced 27 new cases, amounting to a 2.7 percent increase. The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths remained the same at four, with the last one reported as being on Nov 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner. The figure compares to 72.8 in Darien, 76.7 in La Grange Park, 82.9 in DuPage County, 83.7 in Hinsdale, 85.6 in Elmhurst, 90.8 in Clarendon Hills, 91.5 in suburban Cook County, 95.9 in Burr Ridge and 105.1 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,254,185, up 1.8 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 21,361 state residents. Nationally, 30.4 million people have caught the virus, up 1.7 percent from the week before. A total of 552,829 people have died from the virus in the United States.
