LOS ANGELES, CA — Nearly 150 firefighters were battling a structure fire in the Green Meadows neighborhood of Los Angeles Saturday. Emergency officials had upgraded the fire to a major emergency incident by the afternoon. The incident at 8730 S. Crocker St. was dubbed the "87th Place Fire," according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The blaze reportedly started outside the single-story building and spread to the inside, the L.A. Fire Department's Brian Humphrey said. The building appears to have housed a marijuana grow operation in addition to a furniture business, he added later. As the fire swelled to a greater alarm, it became too dangerous for crews to work inside. Some 111 firefighters were ordered to continue fighting the blaze outside and defend nearby structures, Humphrey said. The City News Service contributed to this report.
