DARIEN, IL — Darien saw a slightly higher increase in the rate of new coronavirus cases last week than the week before, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, Darien had a total of 1,575 coronavirus cases, up 23 from a week before. The previous week, the city saw a 1.5 percent increase in cases. The city's number of coronavirus deaths stayed the same in the last week, at 19. That works out to less than a thousandth of Darien's population. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 2.1 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload. As of Sunday, Darien had 72.8 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning, better than its neighbors. The figure compares to 76.7 in La Grange Park, 80.2 in Western Springs, 82.9 in DuPage County, 83.7 in Hinsdale, 85.6 in Elmhurst, 90.8 in Clarendon Hills, 91.5 in suburban Cook County, 95.9 in Burr Ridge and 105.1 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands). As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,254,185, up 1.8 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 21,361 state residents. Nationally, 30.4 million people have caught the virus, up 1.7 percent from the week before. A total of 552,829 people have died from the virus in the United States.
