The East River Park Compost Yard is a one-acre compost facility located within the beautiful 57-acre East River Park. In 1998 the Ecology Center moved its composting operation from a community garden space in the Lower East Side and made a home in East River Park. As one of Manhattan’s largest composting facilities, the site takes in nearly 1 million lbs of organic waste each year with materials coming from local food scrap drop-off sites, woodshops, and chipped park waste. As part of the NYC Compost Project, this site plays an important role in helping NYC reach its zero-waste goals.
This event is part of East River Park Spring Community Day. Hosted by many organizations who work in and around the park, there will be workshops, games, activities, crafts, and tours to alternative green spaces. Aimed to celebrate the park, connect with your community, and learn more about your local environment and what the future holds for the park.
How do I get to East River Park Compost Yard? The East River Compost Yard is located within East River Park. Detailed directions can be found here. The site is the lot directly south of the amphitheater. The entrance is on the side facing the FDR not the waterfront.
