FREMONT, CA — Police on Friday received multiple reports that a man was threatening several people with a handgun at the Kabob House restaurant in Fremont, authorities said. After some confusion over whether a weapon had been fired, a pursuit led to the man's arrest. Asaam Ghanem, 35, of Hayward was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a person with a firearm, making criminal threats, felony evading and resisting arrest, the Fremont Police Department said in a release. Around 3:15 p.m., officers were called to Kabob House on the 37000 block of Fremont Blvd. where multiple people reported that a man had walked in with a handgun and demanded food. He was also reportedly threatening to shoot everyone in the area, police said. One person said that the man had actually attempted to shoot someone. After some confusion, police later determined that the man had not fired his gun, which was described as a black handgun with an extended magazine, officials said. Video surveillance reportedly showed the man pointing his handgun directly at one person, who may have intervened after the man demanded his food. Police have not identified this person. "Officers believe that the reporting party was referring to this victim as the one who the suspect attempted to shoot," police said. "Investigators would like to speak to the unidentified victim." After police arrived, the suspect had fled in a vehicle. Police found Ghanem driving southbound on Fremont Boulevard at County Drive. After a short pursuit, Ghanem got out of his car and attempted to run from police on foot, but officers quickly caught up to him, officials said. The firearm was not recovered after police searched his vehicle. Ghanem was booked into the Santa Rita Jail, where his bail was set at $290,000. His arraignment is scheduled for April 6. at the East County Hall of Justice. Anyone with information relating to this incident was urged to call the Fremont Police Department's investigations unit at 510-790-6900.
