CALVERTON, NY — A Coram man died in a two-car crash in Calverton Thursday morning, Riverhead police said. The crash happened at 6:14 a.m. at the intersection of Burman Boulevard and New York State Route 25, the entrance to Enterprise Park at Calverton, police said. Leonor Parra-Nunez, 61, of Coram, was driving north in a 1997 Nissa Maxima on Burman Blvd. and, despite having a red light, reportedly entered the intersection, where he was struck by Rolando Ajcuc-Chamale, 33, of Calverton, who was heading east in a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox SUV on Rt. 25, police said. Authorities found the two heavily damaged vehicles, one in the intersection and one in the nearby wooded area. Parra-Nunez was extricated from his vehicle by members of the Wading River Fire Department, treated at the scene, and taken by members of Riverhead Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center with serious injuries; he later died, police said. Ajcuc-Chamale was treated at the scene and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by members of the Ridge Fire Department with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The Riverhead Police Department's detective division responded to the scene and was assisted by the New York State Police Department's collision reconstruction team with the investigation, police said. The roadway was closed in both directions for several hours while the investigation was conducted and then later reopened to traffic. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Riverhead police at 631-727-4500. Patch's Lisa Finn contributed to this report.
