BOSTON — Massachusetts was named one of the least-safe states during the coronavirus pandemic in a new ranking by WalletHub. To determine the ranking, the personal finance website compared the rates of five key metrics: vaccination, positive testing, hospitalization, death and transmission. The Bay State ranked 43rd in the overall ranking, despite having the fifth-highest vaccination rate in the country. The state's high death rate, the second-worst in the country, was a factor in the low overall ranking. Other New England neighbors fared better in the ranking. Two — Vermont and Rhode Island — were named in the top 10, while New Hampshire was in the middle at number 23. Alaska earned the top spot, followed by New Mexico and Hawaii.
