SAN RAFAEL, CA — The San Rafael Public Library has launched a book program that aims to promote social equity. The "Book to Action" program includes a series of events that centers around Brit Bennett's "The Vanishing Half." Bennett's emphasis on racial justice and equity, colorism, and issues impacting trans people will be the basis of the series. Supervising Librarian Jill Harris and Librarians Bonnie Groshong and Margaret Stawowy along with many library staffers are spearheading this initiative. Programming for this series will included a film screening and panel discussion co-hosted with SURJ Marin and centered on the film "Little White Lie" (available to stream for free on Kanopy), as well as a virtual conversation with writer, historian and anti-racist scholar Dr. Ibram X. Kendi. The program features a 21-Day Race and Equity Challenge that encourages participants to read, watch or listen to content promoting equity and racial justice for 21 straight days.
