Press release from the City of Berkeley: March 30, 2021 Berkeley, California (Tuesday, March 30, 2021) - On March 30 at 7:00 am, the Berkeley Police Department (BPD) SpecialResponse Team (SRT) assisted Colma PD in serving a high-risk search warrant ata residence on Channing Ave. near Bonar St. Based on facts from a previous arrest by Colma PD, they obtaineda search warrant and requested assistance from BPD. Colma PD does not have aSWAT team (special weapons and tactics team). BPD considers it standardprocedure to have SRT serve this high-risk warrant to keep the officersinvolved, subjects and the public safe. SRT is the Berkeley PD SWAT team and istrained in handling high-risk situations. SRT members surrounded the residential location to ensure thesafety of all parties in the neighborhood. SRT used trained negotiators, to tryand de-escalate the situation and have the subject exit the residence on theirown. Negotiators were unable to make contact via phone, therefore a loudspeakerwas used requesting the subject exit the residence. The loudspeaker notification was successful by negotiators andall subjects exited the house without further incident. The suspect wasdetained and SRT members conducted a safety sweep of the residence. Afterconfirming the location was safe, BPD turned the location over to Colma PDdetectives to search for evidence as authorized by their search warrant. The safety and security of the residents of Berkeley are alwaysour priority. In this operation we were able to safely assist Colma PD, usingtrained police personnel from the Special Response Team.
