Press release from the City of Berkeley: March 31, 2021 Berkeley, California (Wednesday, March 31, 2021) - On March 26th, around 11:44 pm, Berkeley Police officers responded to a report of a person armed with a gun in the parking lot of the La Quinta hotel, 920 University Avenue. The officers who responded were assigned that evening as a specialized traffic enforcement unit, which is a grant-funded program issued by the California Office of Traffic Safety. When the officers arrived at the hotel they observed a vehicle leaving the parking lot and noted that it matched the description of the vehicle associated with the armed person. Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop of the vehicle for a vehicle code violation. Officers searched the vehicle based on probable cause and located a handgun with no serial number, commonly referred to as a "ghost gun." Officers interviewed the driver who admitted to ownership of the handgun. The driver (a 22 year old male from Oakland) was arrested for carrying a loaded firearm, carrying a concealed firearm and carrying a firearm with a high-capacity magazine.
