Dewees Island is small barrier island that is under a conservation easement. We take pride in the preservation of the beautiful environment and wildlife. The private island is also home to residents who share the same passion for the environment. Currently, the Dewees Island POA is seeking a full time Assistant Utility Operator. Candidates must be reliable, self-motivated, customer service focused. Candidate is subject to 30-day probationary period. After 90 days of fulltime employment, candidate is eligible for fulltime benefits. Summary Assists the Operator in Charge with operating and maintaining the water and wastewater utilities of Dewees Island SC, ensuring that the Island always has a sufficient quantity of good potable water, and that the wastewater is treated and disposed of, both to the quality and quantity as approved by the DHEC permits. Also performs a wide variety of work to ensure that the public facilities and infrastructure are maintained in a safe and effective working condition including company golf carts and pools. Collaborates with team of staff to provide owners quality service. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Assists in the daily operation of a low-pressure sewer system and centralized wastewater plant and community tile field. Assists in the daily operation of a reverse osmosis water treatment system. Chemical treatment includes anti-scalent, liquid sodium hypochlorite, and corrosion inhibitor addition. Assists in the implementation, management and maintenance of regulatory records and the associated filing system. Assists the Operator in Charge in the compiling of and submittal of all required regulatory documentation and notices to all relevant governmental authorities. Assists and helps prepare and implement a preventative maintenance schedule for all systems. Assists in the development and maintenance of an operating procedure for all systems. Orders laboratory, sewer maintenance, and general supplies; maintains equipment parts inventory and requisition new or replacement parts. Maintains sufficient spare parts are on hand to handle any major Utility emergencies on the island. Assists the Operator in Charge in planning and describing tasks that could be performed by contractors if outside the skills of the Assistant Utility Operator and coordinates the completion of such tasks. Responds personally to equipment malfunctions and other emergencies at any time of the day or night seven days a week. Responsible for solid waste and recycled waste removal from the island. Responsible for propane, gasoline and diesel supply and sales on the island. Assists other team members in ensuring public facilities and infrastructure are maintained in a safe and effective working condition as directed by management. Keeps pool operator license and maintains pool. Maintains all POA/Utility golf carts and keeps them in good working and safe condition. Helps to foster work in a team environment. Basic construction and maintenance methods, procedures, tools, equipment, supplies and materials of water and sewer utility systems. Safe work practices under hazardous conditions. Operation of a variety of construction equipment. Knowledge of gas and diesel powered equipment used in the repair, installation, and maintenance of a utility operations system. Knowledge of all safety rules and regulations related to a utility operations system. Knowledge of the materials, equipment, procedures, and practices used in a utility operations system. Knowledge of policies and procedures used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of the utility operations system. Knowledge of OSHA, CDL, and MNOPS regulations. Knowledge of flow monitoring and sampling of water, wastewater, and storm water. Skill in inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing the distribution and collection systems. Skill in using hand and power tools used in the construction, repair, installation, and maintenance of the utility operations system. Skill in operating and maintaining vehicles and equipment used in utility operations. Must have management skills. Ability to focus on root cause to find permanent solutions. Ability to envision and manage critical paths of multiple projects. Ability to keep records and make reports; follow oral and written directions; instruct and lead unskilled assistants. Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, including a culturally diverse general public, with a focus on quality service. Education and/or Experience Education and/or Experience Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by course work or other appropriate trades training is highly desirable. 1-2 years of experience minimum is required. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Possession of the following licenses is desired. At minimum, candidate must possess a trainee permit prior to employment and work to obtain licenses as quickly as viable. “D” level biological wastewater treatment plant operator license “D” level water treatment plant operator license “D” level water distribution system operator license Possession of a valid current driver’s license is essential for all Dewees Island employees. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. Reasoning Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables. Computer Skills A basic working knowledge of computers is required. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to Property Owners, visitors, and other employees of the organization, to prepare and present public information and educational programs and respond to requests and inquiries from the general public, and complete and prepare a variety of forms and reports. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be available for regular standby assignments and work scheduled off-hours and emergencies as required. Compensation: $20 - $24/hour. Commensurate based on experience.
