WAUWATOSA, WI— The Wauwatosa Community Affairs Committee recommended extending the face mask ordinance on Tuesday. If the Common Council approves, the mask ordinance would be in effect until June 16.
It was set to expire on April 7.
Alderman Mike Morgan voted no against extending the ordinance. He suggested calling it a recommendation similar to the CDC and not a mandate.
"All our seniors and teachers are vaccinated and now we are moving on to basically almost anyone who wants to get a vaccination. It is pretty clear yet we are still mandating masks," Morgan said.
He added, "We continue to lose credibility to mandate masks and the face of it, continuing declining numbers related to COVID-19," he said.
Laura Stephens, Wauwatosa interim health officer, clarified that coronavirus cases have been increasing over the past few weeks in Milwaukee County.
"It started like a blip but now it is looking more like a trend," Stephens said.
