Seattle Extends Eviction Moratoriums, Utility Relief Through June

SEATTLE — Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has extended several emergency measures related to the coronavirus pandemic, lengthening moratoriums on most evictions and keeping utility bill discounts intact through the end of June. The previous orders would have expired on March 31. "While there is hope on the horizon, the work of recovery is just beginning," Durkan said. "Seattle residents and businesses continue to feel the economic impact of this pandemic, and we will not successfully recover if we do not include the recovery needs of low-income communities and small businesses. Extending the eviction moratorium provides housing stability for our neighbors as new federal funding arrives." For residential properties, owners cannot attempt to evict tenants unless there is an "imminent threat to the health and safety of the community." Renters also cannot be charged late fees or interest on past due payments. Tenants are still required to pay rent when possible, and the city encourages landlords to offer flexible payment plans. Similar conditions apply for independently owned businesses and nonprofits, with 50 or fewer employees. According to the mayor's office, Seattle and King County are awaiting $23 million in federal rental assistance from the American Rescue Plan and closely monitoring legislative actions on the state level regarding eviction protection and financial aid for landlords and tenants. The Seattle City Council was set to vote on legislation that would guarantee legal representation for those facing eviction after the moratoriums lift but delayed action in a vote Monday afternoon, the Seattle Times reported. Tenants who receive eviction notices while the moratorium is in place are encouraged to file a complaint online or contact the city's hotline at 206-684-5700.
