19 Percent Of Virginians Received 1 Dose Of COVID-19 Vaccine

VIRGINIA — At least 19 percent of Virginians — 1,621,643 people — have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the latest data from the Virginia Department of Health. In addition, 916, 276 people are fully vaccinated as of Thursday morning. While vaccinations continue across the state, most COVID-19 health metrics have been improving. On Thursday, 1,25o new cases were reported, and the seven-day average of daily cases fell to 1,317. At a peak, the case average had been 6,166 daily cases on Jan. 18. Current hospitalizations stand at 1,129 after averaging in the 3,000s in much of January. There are 230 COVID-19 patients in the intensive care units and 144 on ventilators. Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 30 percent capacity, and ICU occupancy is at 79 percent, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. The 2019 average for ICU occupancy was 67 percent. Virginia's positive average is trending down, along with the average of PCR tests performed. The seven-day average of positive PCR tests stands at 5.5 percent statewide as of March 7, down from a peak of 17.4 percent on Jan. 3. An average of 18,782 daily PCR testing encounters were reported statewide on March 7, down from a peak of 35,030 on Jan. 14. The state has seen an increase in COVID-19 deaths reported in recent weeks as VDH processes 2021 death certificates. VDH said the increase is related to a post-holiday surge of COVID-19 cases. There were 53 new deaths reported Thursday. A more accurate visualization of deaths involves VDH's death by date on the death certificate data. The three days with the most deaths so far have been Jan. 8 (81 confirmed and 22 probable COVID-19 deaths), Jan. 15 (66 confirmed and 30 probable COVID-19 deaths) and Jan. 17 (70 confirmed and 23 probable COVID-19 deaths).
