MANASSAS, VA — A new program will provide up to six months of free internet access to Prince William County residents who have been affected by the pandemic. The program is being offered by People Inc., a Virginia-based community action organization. Residents can qualify for the program if the coronavirus pandemic has hurt their financial situation, according to a news release. People can qualify if they've lost their job, suffered a reduction in hours, or needed to assist children at home with distance learning. To qualify, applicants will have to show a need for internet access and meet income eligibility requirements. Angie Groseclose is the vice president and chief operating officer with People Inc. "Access to the internet is a necessity. It's necessary for telehealth appointments, searching for a job and for kids to attend school," she said in a news release. "It's an extra expense that may not be in everyone's budget. We want to make internet service more accessible for those who need it." Internet access has been crucial to many Americans as businesses adapt to telework and schools transition to distance and hybrid learning. A survey by the Pew Research Center found that more than 50 per cent of Americans described internet access as "essential" during the pandemic. The CARES Act is funding People Inc.'s program. The program is available for residents of Prince William County, including those in the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. For more information about the program, residents can call People Inc. at 833-962-2039. Applicants can also email People Inc. at [email protected].
