Description
Herndon Village Network (HVN) invites Herndon residents, age 55 or older, who no longer can drive—or who feel uncomfortable driving—to receive free, unlimited, private transportation on weekdays and weekends for a one-time registration fee of $20. Herndon Village Network support gives senior citizens the independence key to keeping them connected to the Herndon community they love. As one Herndon Village Network member shared, Thank you so much for the rides you provide…. I want to mention one of your drivers, Michael ..., who has provided many rides to me throuout [sic] the year-—to the pharmacy, bank, etc. (too numerous to mention). I am especially grateful to Michael as I have no one else to drive me and can’t take public transportation. I also want to express my gratitude to Chris who went to a pharmacy in Leesburg as my local pharmacy did not have my medication. Your volunteers are truly giving persons helping those of us who need help. A local 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Herndon Village Network greatly appreciates its dedicated volunteers, like Chris and Michael, and welcomes new members from the Herndon 20170 and Kendrick Court Apartment areas. If Herndon Village Network sounds like a good fit for you or a loved one, read on for answers to commonly asked questions. How do I join? Please complete the membership interest form on the Herndon Village Network website https://herndonvillagenetwork.org/join/. If you're unable to use the website, please contact the Herndon Village Network Rides Coordinator via email or phone message, and be sure to include your name, address, and contact information. Email Message: [email protected] Phone Message: (703) 375-9439 The Rides Coordinator will contact you to answer your questions, complete necessary membership paperwork, and collect your one-time $20 registration fee ($30 for senior citizen couples). How do I request a ride? After joining, call and leave a message for the Rides Coordinator at (703) 375-9439 at least 48 hours before your planned outing. The Rides Coordinator will list your request so that a Herndon Village Network driver may volunteer to help you. The driver will then contact you directly. If, for some reason, a volunteer is not available, the Rides Coordinator will let you know in plenty of time to make other arrangements. Who are the drivers? Herndon Village Network drivers are neighborly volunteers, age 25 or older, who have undergone vetting. Vetting includes a review of the volunteer's driving record and a police check. Drivers use their own vehicles, which are insured. Herndon Village Network provides secondary insurance to drivers while fulfilling transportation requests. Where may I go? Herndon Village Network provides rides for visiting doctors, picking up prescriptions, shopping for groceries, getting haircuts, and more! While most members request transportation to somewhere in Fairfax and Loudoun Counties, Herndon Village Network does consider requests outside of these areas on a case-by-case basis. What other benefits are there? In addition to providing transportation, Herndon Village Network occasionally offers complimentary opportunities to help you remain independent and connected with the community. These opportunities vary from year to year and have included things like providing occasional shelf-stable groceries for those in need, organizing movie and theatre events, holding senior citizen information fairs, sponsoring ice cream socials, and more. Be sure to read the monthly Herndon Village Network newsletter to stay abreast of senior citizen news and events. Herndon Village Network: Neighbors Helping Neighbors One Ride at a Time
