How To Participate In Virginia's Republican Nominating Convention

VIRGINIA — The Republican Party of Virginia has decided to hold an "unassembled convention" on May 8 and allow delegates to cast ballots for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general at 37 sites across the state. Voting sites for the convention will be announced beginning April 12. In February, the Republican Party of Virginia's State Central Committee announced plans to hold an in-person, drive-in convention at Liberty University in Lynchburg in order to avoid violating the ban on large gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, that proposal was called off because Liberty University had not given its approval to hold the convention on its property and due to the difficulty of thousands of vehicles from across the state traveling to a single site on the same day. Although the Republican Party will continue to use a convention format, party officials decided on March 12 to allow delegates to vote at multiple locations across the state. Interested parties need to fill out a delegate form, send it to their local Republican Party before their deadline, and then on May 8 vote between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. at a designated location that will be announced starting on April 12. Potential delegates are asked to check their email constantly for more information about convention day voting locations near them. The Republican candidates for governor include state Sen. Amanda Chase, Del. Kirk Cox, Paul Davis, Peter Doran, Octavia L. Johnson, Merle Rutledge, Kurt Santini, Pete Snyder, Glenn Youngkin and Sergio de la Pena.
