FREDERICKSBURG, VA — The Fredericksburg Police Department is hosting a food drive in collaboration with the Living Waters Christian Center Church. Donations are being accepted until the end of March and will benefit the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, the Hazel Hill pantry, and the Forrest Village pantry. The food drive was announced on the Fredericksburg Police Department's Facebook page on Wednesday. The police department also posted a video of Chief of Police Brian Layton with Pastor John Butler of the Living Waters Church. "I am so excited to announce that our police department is partnering with this wonderful, community focused church for a food drive," Layton said. "You can help us make a difference by donating non-perishable items or gift cards to local grocery stores," Butler added. He specified that donations will be accepted at the Living Water Christian Center Church at 318 Amaret Street, and at the Fredericksburg Police Headquarters at 2200 Cowan Boulevard. More than 15 per cent of Fredericksburg residents experienced food insecurity in 2020, according to Feeding America. Feeding America's statistics indicated that more than 4,500 people in Fredericksburg struggled with hunger as a result of the pandemic. "Thank you for helping us with this initiative," Layton said. "Together we can make a positive difference in our neighbor's lives." Patch has partnered with Feeding America to help raise awareness on behalf of the millions of Americans facing hunger. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks across the country, estimated that in 2020, more than 50 million Americans would not have enough nutritious food to eat due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. This is a Patch social good project; Feeding America receives 100 percent of donations. Find out how you can donate in your community or find a food pantry near you.
