SPRING VALLEY, NY — Spring Valley High School football players reeling from the loss of an alumnus were doubly shaken when, after a nearby shooting, their opening game was canceled last Saturday.
Then school district officials talked and the game was rescheduled for Tuesday — and Spring Valley won.
Spring Valley football coach Andrew Delva told The Journal News his players should not have been penalized over an incident that had nothing to do with the team.
One 17-year-old died and another was critically injured March 26 on Monsey Boulevard near Fletcher Road.
"Given the seriousness of the incidents on Friday, the active police investigation and input from the Clarkstown and Spring Valley Police Departments, Superintendent Giamartino and I made the collective decision to postpone the game to a later date," Clarkstown Superintendent Martin Cox wrote to parents the next day.
It was the second game that had been canceled on the Tigers — Nyack's team found out about a positive coronavirus case hours before that game was to start.
The Tigers bested the Vikings by 34-14. Watch a video on lohud.com.
The Spring Valley Police Department asked for the public's assistance regarding the shooting: email [email protected] or call the police department at 845-356-7400.
The Tigers were already mourning the death of Jared Lloyd, a lieutenant with the Spring Valley Fire Department, football player and graduate of SVHS Class of 2004.
A funeral for Lloyd, who died March 23 rescuing residents in a massive fire at an assisted living facility in Spring Valley, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Palisades Credit Union Park Boulder Stadium in Pomona.
