AUSTIN, TX — An Austin no-kill animal shelter has rescued and transported 1,000 pets to safety after February's winter storms. Austin Pets Alive!, a no-kill shelter that focuses on innovative lifesaving programs to save animals most at-risk of euthanasia, announced Thursday it had transported 27 cats by plane to a Wichita, Kansas shelter early Wednesday. Wednesday's transport marked a goal for the shelter after culminating a weeks-long effort to transport 1,000 at-risk pets to safe shelters after February's winter storms. The shelter's Town Lake facility became a central transport hub for these pets in need, while shelter partners across the country organized the next leg of transportation to reach their final destinations, authorities said. From Florida to Washington to Massachusetts, animal shelter staff across the U.S. welcomed these vulnerable pets with open arms, providing safe shelter and care to get them ready for adoption within their respective new communities.
