Austin ISD To Serve Free Meals For Children, Caregivers This Week

AUSTIN, TX — Austin ISD will provide free meals for students and their caregivers this week, officials said. The school district announced in a news release Monday it will provide free meals from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday at 25 schools. The news release states the district will offer free seven-day meal packs at more than 40 locations throughout the city every Thursday. Time slots for those locations are from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The school district states meal packs are free for any child younger than 19, for those older than 19 who utilize special education resources, or those who are enrolled in school to complete the requirements for a high school diploma. Families using curbside pickup are advised to stay in their cars and not enter buildings, the release states. Families who come by the meal sites by walking, biking or transit may still receive food outside the campuses. Meals are served cold to be taken home and reheated. The release states parents or caregivers may receive free meals if they are accompanying children and have documentation for those whom they are picking meals up for. Documentations include a birth certificate, student ID card, report card, or attendance record — at the point of meal service. Children do not have to be enrolled in AISD to receive meals.
