AUSTIN, TX — This year's winter storms halted the release of police footage taken during a deadly officer-involved shooting in February, authorities announced Friday. The shooting was the result of an East Austin break-in and hostage situation.
Austin police said February's storms affected the department's ability to produce the footage in its initial 60-day time frame. Instead, the footage will be released no later than May 1.
On Feb. 10, officers were called to 2907 Rogge Lane around 5:20 p.m. after a 21-year-old man who crashed his car into a home and broke into a house occupied by a woman and 10-year-old child.
Arriving officers forced entry into the home after hearing screams from inside, only to be met with gunfire, according to a February Patch article.
One of the officers returned fire before retreating from the home, officials said. One officer sustained a minor injury.
After unsuccessful attempts to coax the suspect into surrendering, the man emerged about an hour later carrying the child as a hostage. A SWAT officer fired his weapon at the suspect, killing him, authorities said.
Officer Jeffrey Hutchison, who has been with the department for eight years, and officer Ryan Nichols, who has served for 13 years, were placed on administrative duty per standard police protocol pending the outcome of the investigation.
Authorities said Friday both Hutchison and Nichols have returned to full duty.
