MIDDLESEX, NJ — On Saturday, the Union County prosecutor's office arrested a Plainfield man, who they say had consumed alcohol and was going 70 miles per hour in a 25-mph-zone prior to colliding with a car driven by a Middlesex borough man last May. The Middlesex borough man, Akwasi Boateng, 39, was killed in the crash. Mike Ramos, 25, of Plainfield was taken into custody without incident Saturday, March 27 and charged with a single count of second-degree vehicular manslaughter. The crash happened at 4:50 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5 at the intersection of Clinton Avenue and West Fourth Street in Plainfield. Police say Ramos was driving a GMC Yukon SUV when he collided with the Toyota Camry driven by Boateng. It took police nearly a year to piece together what happened that night and they now say they have evidence that Ramos had consumed alcohol and was traveling at speeds of over 70 miles per hour in a 25-mph zone immediately before colliding with Boateng's Toyota. Ramos had also just run two red lights prior to the collision, said the Union County prosecutor. Boateng sustained multiple serious injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead that same day.
