PENNSYLVANIA — Pottstown-based D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc. had the most sales of craft beer in the nation last year, according to the Brewers Association, a trade group representing craft and independent brewers. Two other Pennsylvania beers made the association's annual top 50 ranking of craft brewers based on sales volume: Artisinal Brewing Ventures of Downington and Troegs, which is based in Hershey. Artisinal, a merger of Victory Brewing and Southern Tier, was ranked 8th. Troegs was ranked 20th. Of the top 50 overall brewing companies, 40 were small and independent craft establishments, including Yuengling. That's the nation's oldest brewing company, established in 1829. "The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed where Americans purchased alcohol in 2020. Breweries who had established packaging and distribution capacity were best positioned to take advantage of the boom in off-premise sales and weather market uncertainty," Bart Watson, the association's chief economist, said in a news release. "These businesses also saw variation in performance based on geography and business model, with different parts of the country seeing very different beer trends, and draught-heavy breweries suffering." The top 10 brewers by sales volume: 1. D. G. Yuengling and Son Inc., Pottsville. 2. Boston Beer Co., Boston, MA. 3. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Chico, CA. 4. Duvel Moortgat Paso Robles, Kansas City, MO. 5. Gambrinus Berkeley CA., Shiner, TX. 6. CANarchy, Longmont, CO. 7. Bell's Brewery Inc., Comstock, MI. 8. Artisanal Brewing Ventures, Downingtown PA; Lakewood, NY and Brooklyn NY. 9. Stone Brewing, Escondido, CA. 10. Deschutes Brewery, Bend, OR.
