Description
We are moving and are unable to take our 55 gallon tank and five fish with us. It is not necessary to take the tank with them if you already have one set up. I have: One male peacock cichlid (Hawk) Two honduran convicts, which I believe are both male (Lou is larger, McGee is smaller) One red parrot, I think is female (Bambi, because of her tail) One lemon oscar, unsure of male/female (Sunny) Goes without saying, but feel free to rename them :) :) :P I have had all of these fish together since November 2020. They do very well together because they are all a little aggressive by nature. They were all bought at the 6th Avenue Aquarium in San Francisco. The red parrot and the lemon oscar spend all day together, in or near their bridge, while the other three tend to stay in their own little spots alone. They will chase each other, and if they will not leave each other alone, facing off to one another for too long, or two of them picking on one, I will feed them and the behavior goes away. They typically eat first around 11 or 12, but seem to eat more during the evening, wanting to be fed at least twice more. All of them will eat tropical crisps, and granules. They love shrimp, which I give them 1-2 times a week. The red parrot will not go to the top to eat unless it is shrimp. She sits and waits for food to drop, and she is the largest so she gets a little feisty at feeding time. I read that their teeth are set back in their mouth as a deformation due to inbreeding, so while I think she should just go to the top instead of waiting and fighting, I don't think she actually can grab the crisps from the top. The granules I use are for middle feeders and they will all eat those as well. The cichlid and red parrot used to eat mostly cichlid food, but for some reason they do not eat them anymore, though I have seen the lemon oscar eat them. She will eat anything. They usually will not eat flakes when I offer them. The smallest guy, McGee, one of the convicts, is usually the one that lets me know they are hungry. He hangs out near the top anyway, but when I walk by he will get my attention, and if, when I am saying hi to him, the others come out, I know they will all eat at the same time. Just part of our weird daily life hehe :) I know all of their behaviors very well at this point. I have had the male cichlid the longest, since September 2020, and basically built all of this for him. I got the red parrot to be his friend, then we got them a huge tank, got him more friends, made sure they were all happy with the driftwood, caves, and plants. I have read that male cichlids do not get a long with each other unless there are several, so if you already have just one male peacock cichlid, I wouldn't recommend adding another, unless of course you are experienced with tank life. Though the convicts may be in the cichlidae family, as is the red parrot. As mentioned, all of these types of fish are aggressive in nature, and that is why they have all lived in *mostly* harmony. None of them have been harmed by the other fish or the environment. Photos shared. Please let me know if you are able to take them in. If your fish need new friends! You can have my current tank set up if you do not have one already, but you will have to buy a stronger filter. The current one is too small, and I'm cleaning the tank often. I am also just a beginner at owning fish, so I do not know the best ways to keep the tank self-cleaning, or simply couldn't afford them during this journey. Sometimes the tank would become a little orange, but the fish didn't seem to mind at all, so I believe they are VERY hardy fish and will move into a new environment perfectly. I have some odds and ends supplies, such as alkaline booster, stress coat, ph tester kit, food, thermometer. The tank has a small heater, which usually keeps a safe temperature, though a larger one would make the red parrot happier, she loves hanging out by the heater. The tank also has a small filter, but a new filter is necessary. The bio-wheel doesn't spin anymore and it's just too small for 55 gallons. The tank also came with an ocean backdrop, but it is old and the ends have little tears. There is also a glass slide for the top that covers half of the area. I really love these fish and need them to go to a good home. Someone who loves fish, enjoys the ambiance and decor, and can take great care of them. Please share this with any friends or family in or near San Francisco that you think might be able to take them in. We have spent a lot of time and money on these little fishies and I hope they will be happier in their new home!
