FREEHOLD, NJ - Construction on an all-new "universally integrated" playground at Opatut Park has begun, with Freehold Township eagerly awaiting the delivery of several new items to ensure all residents can enjoy the open space. Dubbed "My Playground 2", the play space is uniquely designed for children of all ages and abilities. It's scheduled to open this summer pending the delivery of the pavilion, picnic tables, and rubber tile surface. The town is also modifying the adjacent parking area to provide greater access to the playground, according to Superintendent of Parks and Recreation Sue McGough. Main additions to the playground include a Game Time Custom 2–5 unit, a Game Time Custom 5–12 unit, a 3 Bay Prime Time Swing Set with two belt seats, two enclosed tot seats, one expression swing and one tandem expression swing, according to McGough. Other inclusions are ADA-compliant wide ramping, adaptive switch-capable sensors, musical play, gizmo panels and activity panels on the 5 - 12 unit, as well as a freestanding sensory dome, 2 spinning sensory wave seats, RoxAll seesaw, merry-go-all and GT stockcar. A 30-foot octagon pavilion will cover four ADA-compliant in-ground picnic tables. Four in-ground benches have also been included in the design. While an exact opening date has not been announced yet, the township is urging families to keep away from the playground until it is fully open to the public. "Please help us help you! Keep your child safe by refraining from using Freehold Township's newest playground until it is completed and open for use," the municipal parks and recreation department urged in a Facebook post. "Thank you for your cooperation!" Located at 458 East Freehold Road, Opatut Park is made up of a total 130 acres, with 46 of those acres developed. In addition to the playground, the park complex includes multi-purpose fields, a softball field, basketball courts, restrooms and an open pavilion, according to the municipal website. Freehold Township has 14 parks with playgrounds, athletic fields and nature trails for residents to enjoy. For a full list of parks, click here. See a preview of the new playground below: GOOD NEWS!
