Chatham 'Future City' Builders Need Votes For National Award

CHATHAM, NJ — The architects of Helianthus could use your help. Three Chatham eighth-graders need votes to win a national award for the "future city" they developed. Dhiren Holland, Priyanka Patel and Ishita Yadav created a model for Helianthus — a revolutionary lunar city a century in the future — and recently won first place in the New Jersey Future City competition. Now they're up for the Future City Competition's People's Choice Award. The team created the tabletop model, which includes an underground lava tube with residential, commercial and light industrial zones and a heavy industrial zone on the lunar surface. The city includes 125 detailed buildings, and the model is made from recyclables including keys, perfume bottles, boxes, cigar tubes and plastic coins.
