LOS ANGELES, CA — A pileup involving a wrong-way driver killed a man and woman and injured three others overnight on the northbound Harbor (110) Freeway in downtown Los Angeles. Authorities suspect alcohol was a factor. The crash occurred at about 2 a.m. near 9th Street. A man driving a Lexus SUV was driving southbound in the northbound lanes when he slammed into a Toyota sedan, killing both people in the Toyota, according to the California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Lane. Another vehicle crashed into the wreckage, and three more people were hospitalized including a child. The man driving the SUV was briefly trapped in the vehicle and taken to a hospital with serious injuries. A woman passenger in the SUV and a child in the backseat sustained minor injuries, Lane said. The names of the fatally injured people were not immediately available. The Nos. 3, 4 and 5 lanes of the northbound 110 Freeway at Ninth Street and the transition roads from both directions of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway to the northbound110 Freeway were closed until about 6:30 a.m., when all lanes and transition roads were reopened. City News Service and Patch staffer Paige Austin contributed to this report.
