Concord Police Officer Saves Life Of Toddler Exposed To Fentanyl

CONCORD, CA — A Concord police officer saved the life of a 2-year-old child who was exposed to the opiate fentanyl Friday night, the Concord Police Department said. Officer Aaron Khamosh was on patrol when he was flagged down on Salvio Street by a woman frantically in need of help. Khamosh ran toward the car where he saw a toddler in the back seat who was not breathing. Unaware of the fentanyl exposure, Khamosh jumped into action by giving the child chest compressions and performing CPR. The baby was unresponsive and Khamosh could not find a pulse. As the 2-year-old grew pale, the mother revealed the child "got ahold of some fentanyl" and needed Narcan, an anti-opioid medication used in overdose situations, police said. Khamosh gave the baby two doses of Narcan and continued CPR. Soon, the child started breathing and regained consciousness. Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and emergency medical personnel continued medical care and the child was taken to John Muir Health, Concord Medical Center. The 2-year-old was recovering at Children's Hospital Oakland and was under the care of Child and Family Services, Concord police said Monday. The baby's mother was arrested and charged with suspected child endangerment and possession of a narcotic, police said. "We are grateful the baby will survive this ordeal and for Officer Khamosh's quick thinking," Concord police said. "A reminder to our community, that fentanyl is an extremely dangerous and potent opioid.
