Description
QUINCY, MA — Police in Quincy shot and killed a man who they said robbed a convenience store in Rockland, stole a police cruiser, and engaged in an hours-long armed standoff Friday.
The man has identified only as 36 and white.
Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey said the man took control of a police rifle in the cruiser and started exiting the passenger door, ignoring orders to surrender when he was shot. He was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center.
Authorities had been attempting to negotiate with the man, Morrissey said.
The situation started with a reported armed robbery at a 7-11 in Rockland, Morrissey said. Local police ran after the man and followed him when he stole a cruiser. Morrissey did not comment on how the man took control of the cruiser.
The chase ended on Burgin Parkway in Quincy with a fleet of law enforcement agencies surrounding the man, who ran over spike strips, police said.
The cruiser came to a stop down the road near BJ's gas station. Officers tried to negotiate with the man, who exited the cruiser and was shot, Morrissey said.
