HYATTSVILLE, MD — Two Prince George's County Public Schools students won a Harvard University debate competition in Spanish, The Diamondback reported on March 22. The outlet said that victors, Alexa Figueroa and Dennis Martinez, are both seniors at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville. The duo debated whether to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, journalists Amanda Hernández and Christine Zhu wrote. In the end, the team became national champions of the Harvard University Debate En Español Tournament, The Diamondback noted. "I could represent a lot of Hispanic debaters, who kind of feel like they can't join debate because of the language barrier or because they fear racism or their migratory status," Figueroa told the reporters. "It just felt amazing … That was something that really made me emotional." To learn more about the debate squad and their college plans, check out The Diamondback's full story. Have a story idea?
