ANNAPOLIS, MD —The U.S. Naval Academy lifted some restrictions on midshipmen on March 21, the Capital Gazette reported last Tuesday. Food deliveries and distanced formations on the Yard are now allowed, journalist Heather Mongilio wrote. Mongilio added that most interactions are limited to roommates, and visitors are not allowed on campus. Classes are still online, but the Capital noted that the college will discuss returning to in-person instruction this week. The Naval Academy first adopted virtual learning on Feb. 28 after a surge in coronavirus cases on the Yard. With quarantine and isolation housing filling, the school had to move two batches of 98 infected midshipmen to Annapolis hotels on March 1 and 2. It's unclear how many active cases the college still has. Midshipmen started getting the coronavirus vaccine on March 11. The shot is not required, but administrators encouraged students to take it. Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman suggested that the state may open a mass vaccination site at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in mid-April. He stopped short of confirming the report, however. Maryland announced six upcoming high-volume clinics last week. One of those locations will be in Anne Arundel. The exact site is not yet known.
