Description
Join us in urging this trusted family of influencers to run for high office here in Detroit. Communities of Detroit are gathering to urge Jasahn and Krystal Larsosa to run as a team for the offices of Mayor and Detroit City Council District 1, respectively. Jasahn Larsosa is a well-known community organizer, social justice advocate, and nonprofit executive. He serves currently as Focus: HOPE’s founding director of Advocacy, Equity & Community Empowerment where he oversees racial justice programs and training as well as government, community-based research and other external affairs. He is expected to announce candidacy for Detroit Mayor. If Larsosa announces, he could be the second major contender to challenge Mayor Duggan. Anthony Adams, who served as deputy to former Mayor Kilpatrick, announced his bid for the city’s top office back in January. Larsosa’s wife, Krystal Larsosa, is expected to announce candidacy for Detroit City Council District 1, where 3-time elected Councilmember James Tate is also expected to run again despite controversies surrounding the new marijuana ordinance and construction along Grandriver Avenue. Larsosa is a child- and youth-development professional having worked in juvenile justice and K12 education, but set aside her career to manage home and the family’s business interests. As a result, the family is popular for its community involvement. Their daughters, 14, 12, and 5, known collectively as the Hershekissis, are followed by 250K people on Instagram where they promote appreciation and self-love for Black girls “I’m overjoyed by the prospect of the Larsosas’ candidacies”, said Lee Gaddies. “We need candidates who are rooted in the communities they are serving, who are not just delivering lip service but also walk the walk. The Larsosas are extraordinarily good people deeply involved in the community and able to inspire needed change.” Gaddies is a community and political activist and entrepreneur with a long list of high-profile projects, including his former presidency of the Bagley Community Council for the historic Bagley neighborhood and his being featured in the PBS documentary Blueprint for America, Moving Beyond the Motor City, which details his fight to bring federal dollars into Detroit for mass transit. Gaddies recently released Empire's Fall, a strategy game honoring Black heroes of WWII through his company Gaddies Gaming. He is also a longtime friend of the Larsosas. This is a social distance event in compliance with all the guidelines around preventing the spread of COVID-19. The nomination rally will feature food, speakers, music and local talent followed by brief remarks from the expected candidates. Guests may begin to arrive at 1pm.
