Charging per distance does make some sense. But in my opinion, simpler is always better. This is especially true when it come to our government agencies.
The solution ot save the post offices is to deliver mail 2 days per week per neighborhood rather than 6 days per week per neighborhood. Some people get their mail on monday and thurs. others get their mail on tues and fri. Other f]get theirs on weds and sat. Dong this would cut mail delivery labor costs by 66%. Nobody needs daily mail and if for some reason a person does, they can get a P.O. Box.
In my neighborhood every mailbox is on a persons home rather than at the curb. If all home were required to install their mailbox at the curb, it would cut delivery time and costs considerably.
I could care less if the post office survives or not. One way or another, somebody will deliver snail mail at some cost. But if you want to save the post office, you must cut expenses. Every other business on earth must be cognizant of cost vs. profit. The postal service is no different.
