ABOUT INSPIRE SAILING Inspire Sailing is based in Berkeley, California with direct access to exciting sailing on the San Francisco Bay. The new school and club was founded in March 2021, in the Berkeley Marina, where the nationally-recognized OCSC Sailing operated successfully for 40 years. We aim to be the best sailing school on the West Coast offering a variety of classes (or private instruction) to both the new sailor and the experienced skipper. Our passionate and professional staff provides the highest level of instruction on the San Francisco Bay and West Coast, following the certification standards of the U.S. Sailing organization. Inspire Sailing also offers a “sailing club” membership option, presenting members with local charter opportunities skippered sails, special skills clinics, global destination sailing trips, and discounts on future classes. We also host exciting corporate events which are a great alternative to the “bowling night” or “happy hour.” Our Yacht Management Services (“Fleet Service”) is a critical part of our organization. To keep our clients, members, and boat owners safe and to ensure they have a wonderful on-the-water experience, we have to keep our fleet professionally maintained. ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY - FLEET SERVICE MANAGER We are seeking an energetic, proactive individual to lead our Fleet Service team. It is an exciting time to join this new company as Inspire Sailing is just getting underway! You will be actively involved in building the company. The FLEET SERVICE MANAGER’s job is to: · Help Inspire Sailing provide excellent customer service by making sure each boat in our fleet is charter-ready and safe to operate on the day it is scheduled to sail. We want our fleet of boats safe, reliable, and attractive with a minimum number of “down days”! · Lead the Fleet Service team as they conduct day-to-day maintenance, repairs, and charter turnarounds. · Act as the main interface between boat owners, 3rd party vendors, and our Fleet Service and Accounting teams. · Participate in Manager-on-Duty rotation with other approved Managers. · Set a best-practices approach for reporting, tracking, and conducting maintenance · Contribute to the positive and respectful work environment of Inspire Sailing. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Hire and manage the Fleet Service Staff. 2. Set employee schedules, communicate priorities, assign activities, and monitor performance and billable hours. 3. Establish a set of safety rules and operational procedures. 4. Establish a culture of being tidy, organized, and detail-oriented. 5. Build and implement Inspire Sailing’s maintenance plan including: Daily check-ins, weekly cleaning and inspections, and routine maintenance plans 6. Keep accurate records of maintenance and repairs for each boat, and provide those records to accounting team for purpose of billing boat owner. 7. Implement and follow a Maintenance Notification Process to inform boat owners of work being done on their boats. 8. Implement and follow a Maintenance Recommendation and Repair Process, which includes quoting for services, to request approval from boat owners before work is done. 9. Follow-up on all inquiries and requests made by boat owners. This includes interacting with boat owners directly. 10. Plan routine maintenance activities in a way that minimizes the impact to Inspire Sailing’s charter, school, and events business and that is most cost effective to boat owners. 11. Negotiate with 3rd party service providers on pricing, scheduling, logistics, etc. 12. Oversee the management of inventory, including the purchase of supplies and parts as needed. 13. Ensure that all boats to be chartered are ready and troubleshoot issues promptly. 14. Over longer term, work with Fleet Service Staff team to write training documents on activities like winch servicing, bilge pump repair, battery health check, standing rigging maintenance, etc. 15. Interface with Office Manager, Head of Instruction, and General Manager in weekly status meetings to ensure everyone is aware of issues, opportunities, priorities, and special events. SKILLS REQUIRED • Proactive and motivated with a positive can-do attitude. • Enjoys working with and leading a team. Works well with others. • Organized and detail-oriented. • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment and can multitask effectively. • Forward-thinking when it comes to implementing best-practices and / or using technology. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Customer-service focused. • Sailboat maintenance experience a plus SPECIALIST SKILLS (OPTIONAL) While we are happy to train the right candidate, we would give particular attention to candidates with experience in any of these “specialist” areas of expertise: • Sailboat Rigging • Fiberglass and Gelcoat Repair • Marine Electronics • Marine Carpentry • Marine Diesel or Outboard Engine • Brightwork TIME AND LOCATION This is a full-time role of 40 hours per week, across 5 days (including 1 weekend day). The job is in Berkeley, California. (One Spinnaker Way, Berkeley, CA, 94710) COMPENSATION AND OTHER BENEFITS Compensation range will vary depending on experience and relevant qualifications but roughly in the $28 per hour range. The job begins with a 3-week in-depth training period. After their initial 3-months of employment, team members are eligible for complimentary sailing classes, and other educational opportunities.
