Backyard landscaping wanted

I love my back yard. I have a big patio over my garage and lots of windows facing the yard. Unfortunately the trees were getting old and it is time to start fresh. I have a sprinkler system that will have to be worked around, but it will keep everything living through the summer. I want low maintenance. I don't mind trucking in wood chips and trimming some shrubs every year, but once it's established I don't want to fuss with flowers, bulbs, etc. A little grass is okay, but I'm thinking about making that area smaller. It all turns to moss anyway. I'm thinking more ferns. I want some medium to large trees. I am open to ideas, but I like the idea of making it a bit like a native forest. Price is a factor. I would like to hear ideas with price estimates. I would like to see photos and references. Thanks!
