PORT JEFFERSON, NY — One of three Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Science Olympiad teams that competed in the regional competition on March 20 will head to the state virtual competition in April, according to the Port Jefferson School District. Team A placed fourth out of 44 teams and will head to the state virtual competition in April. Port Jefferson also had a B and C team compete. The Port Jefferson School District congratulated its medal winners: Second Place, Designer Genes – Natalie McGuigan and Peggy YinSecond Place, Sounds of Music – Hugo Onghai and Peggy YinSecond Place, Water Quality – Ben Perez-Flesler and William WuThird Place, Anatomy – Natalie McGuigan and Ben Perez-FleslerThird Place, Astronomy – Gani Ates and William WuThird Place, Disease Detectives – Andrew Patterson and Ben Perez-FleslerFourth Place, Geomapping – Gani Ates and Liam GamengSixth Place, Dynamic Planet – Liam Gameng and William Wu"I am so happy we had a Science Olympiad competition, and I am exceptionally proud of these students who were able to adapt to a virtual competition format in light of the COVID-19 pandemic," science teacher Amanda Brideson said via news release. "I am so proud of them.They really worked hard and it shows!" Brideson and science teacher Nicole Sklar co-coach the teams. The district congratulated all its participants: Frankie Andriani, Warren Coburn, Nick DeDonato, Luke Dickhuth, Teppei Fukuto, Justin Garcia, Safiy Khan, Kasumi Layne-Stasik, Connor Lioio, Emmett Maier, Ricky Melucci, Riley Perrota, Jonah Pflaster, Stefano Rabeno, Arik Sen, Logan Shaffer, Rishabh Singh, Sierra Welsch and Jialin Yue.
