Description
Physical fitness is key for volunteers to be able to respond during an emergency. Join us in Griffith Park as we hike to the Hollywood Sign Saturday, April 10th, at 9 am, we'll hike up to the Hollywood Sign. Physical fitness is vital to personal preparedness. During a disaster, such as an earthquake, or a wild fire trapping cars on the Cajon pass, we may find ourselves stranded with no option other than to hike miles to get to safety. Being able to do so while carrying a light to medium load may make the difference between life and death. Our monthly hikes can be challenging to some of our volunteers, even those in good shape, which indicates how much we need these hikes to better our physical conditioning. During these hikes we discuss various disaster preparedness topics and take turns practicing reporting in over the radio. The purpose of these Hiking Assessments Exercises are for each of us to assess our own physical fitness and to know where we need to make improvements in our own lives. Our Staging Area and Command Post will be at The Fern Dell Picnic Area (2333 Fern Dell Dr). This is a perfect time of year to take a hike, not too hot and not too cold. We will hike past the observatory and the Berlin Forest, down the Mulholland Trail and up to the Hollywood Sign. We'll work on communications, teamwork and focus on the Assistant Team Leader position. This is an beginner hike, not to steep, but on the longer side. Bring a comfortable pair of shoes, water, a mask and a desire to accomplish the mission.
