WAKEFIELD, MA — Coronavirus numbers here are continuing to climb, an ominous sign that the town is still in the thick of a pandemic despite optimism about vaccinations. There were 140 confirmed cases in Wakefield over the past two weeks, bringing the total to 2,222 since the start of the pandemic. The positive test rate has increased from 3.97 percent to 4.31 percent, while the average daily incidence rate per 100,000 has gone from 33.5 to 36.9. There is some good news. One-third of the town's population has received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, with the majority of those 65 and older having been vaccinated at least once. Nearly 5,000 Wakefield residents — about 18 percent — have been fully vaccinated. Mike Carraggi can be reached at [email protected]. Follow him on Twitter @PatchCarraggi.
