Learn to bind a hard cover leather book and decorate it using the traditional method of gilding.
In this class students will create a one of a kind hard cover leather journal and decorate it using the gilding technique. Students will learn to sew a text block, measure for covers, design a cover decoration, and work with brass tools in the blind and foil gilding methods. Topics such as paper grain, leather*, squaring and trimming text blocks, and the history of gildling will be covered. The instructor will be bringing her own collection of brass tools to include with those provided at the shop for this class, allowing for a wide range of decorative possibilities.
All materials will be supplied. *The leather used is an imitation leather.

This class is taught by Mel Hewitt.
Mel Hewitt is a book artist working her way towards becoming proficient in all aspects of the book arts. Her skills currently lie in traditional and contemporary binding structures and finishing techniques, paper marbling, paste papers, and incorporating letter press, screen printing, and relief printing into her pieces. Mel’s work ranges from utilitarian one-of-a-kind journals to sculptural artist books. She is a board member of Spokane Print and Publishing Center where she also teaches classes on the book arts, and serves on the board for the Northwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers.
