In this class students will construct a beautiful one of a kind journal using the coptic/chain stitch method. This is a great introductory technique making it perfect for first time binders. Topics discussed will be the importance of paper grain, how to prep the wood covers, the history of the coptic binding, and the pros and cons of this book structure.
This is an IN-PERSON class. As such the following COVID protocols will be in place:

This class is taught by Mel Hewitt.
Mel Hewitt is a book artist working her way towards becoming proficient in all aspects of the book arts. Her skills currently lie in traditional and contemporary binding structures and finishing techniques, paper marbling, paste papers, and incorporating letter press, screen printing, and relief printing into her pieces. Mel’s work ranges from utilitarian one-of-a-kind journals to sculptural artist books. She is a board member of Spokane Print and Publishing Center where she also teaches classes on the book arts, and serves on the board for the Northwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers.
