Kumiko Johnson Solo Exhibition at Pencil on Paper Gallery DANCING WITH MOON: JOURNEY TO HEALING... “The triangle represents the generation of energy and initiative; it is the most stable physical posture. The circle symbolizes unification, serenity and perfection; it is the source of unlimited techniques. The square stands for form and solidity, the basis of applied control.” – O’ Sensei Morihei Ueshiba Kumiko Johnson integrates form and energy into her brilliantly crafted and captivating work. The subtlety of Johnson’s pristine and delicate marksmanship effortlessly graces its presence on each surface. “Dancing with Moon” reiterates the story of eternal freedom. This solo exhibition reveals Johnson’s openness to the universe to share her messages to the world in the form of art. Each shadow distinctly placed leads us to an untapped adventure. Every change in hue and placement of light gives the viewer a glimpse into the artist’s intent and passion. There’s a story within every frame and a masterful presence of each subject. Johnson invites us to join her throughout each composition in this very personal, peaceful and whimsical dance with the perfectly undisturbed and harmoniously all inspiring moon. ABOUT ARTIST, KUMIKO JOHNSON: KUMIKO JOHNSON has the ability to unite a diverse audience through her quiet grace, undeniable light and humble smile. It only takes a minute when in the presence of this captivating artist to realize that she is truly a woman of her craft. Paying tribute to her culture from lives past and present, Kumiko integrates family, people, life and beauty into all that she creates. When asked about some of her earliest influences, Johnson fondly reminisced on growing up in Japan and seeing her father in his room with a paint brush (fude). She recollected on a time when her father recounted a haiku poem that so beautifully described the refraction of the moon in a pond and its clear and undisturbed nature until the pounce of a frog, to which this singular moon became a thousand moons. “Your mind is like the moon. If your mind is peacefully undisturbed, it shows clearly, but one little hinder creates broken minds.” Kumiko says to this day, her father’s words are always with her. “When I paint, my mind has to be quiet and calm, so that I can see clear.” ABOUT BLACK SHEEP ART CULTURE: BLACK SHEEP ART CULTURE bridges the gap between traditional and non-traditional art spaces by making art accessible to the communities they serve, promoting emerging and established BIPOC artists locally, domestically and internationally.
